US Department of Justice Files Seizure Lawsuit for Airplane Linked to Nicolás Maduro

The United States Department of Justice has filed a civil forfeiture lawsuit concerning a Dassault Falcon 900EX plane, alleging that it was smuggled from the U.S. and operated for the benefit of Nicolás Maduro, violating U.S. sanctions. The aircraft was seized in the Dominican Republic in 2024 and moved to Florida. Authorities claim that the plane was illegally acquired for $13 million through a shell company and exported without authorization to Venezuela.

The U.S. has imposed sanctions against Maduro’s government since 2017, including financial and trade restrictions. These sanctions aim to pressure the regime over its alleged human rights violations and undemocratic practices. Additionally, they prohibit transactions with Maduro and his close associates. The Department of Justice emphasized that the seizure of the plane is part of efforts to prevent U.S. resources from being used to undermine national security.

Response from the Venezuelan Government

The Venezuelan government has labeled the action as “flagrant” and “illegal” theft. Foreign Minister Yván Gil accused the United States of piracy and announced that Venezuela reserves the right to take legal action for the damages incurred. Maduro and his administration have consistently rejected international sanctions, arguing that they are part of an “economic war” designed to destabilize the country.

Political Implications

The seizure occurs amidst tense relations between Caracas and Washington. Although there have been recent attempts at diplomatic rapprochement, such as meetings between U.S. and Venezuelan officials, these legal actions reflect the ongoing distrust between the two parties.
