Maduro’s Regime Escalates Attacks on El Nacional Amid Investigations into ‘Nicolasito’ Connections

The editor president of EL NACIONAL stated that this new incident “adds to the file we are taking to the International Criminal Court.”

The newspaper EL NACIONAL once again fell victim to the intimidation of Nicolás Maduro’s regime this week. On Wednesday, a prosecutor from the dictatorship’s Public Ministry arrived along with a commission from the Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations Corps (CICPC) at the home of José Gregorio Meza, the editor-in-chief of the mentioned media outlet.

The journalist was taken for questioning. He managed to publish that he had “a prosecutor from the Public Ministry and the CICPC at home. They are taking me to testify about some works published in El Nacional. So far, just an investigation, they tell me.”

In light of the situation, the editor president of EL NACIONAL, Miguel Henrique Otero, explained that in addition to Meza, the regime summoned six other people. It was also reported that the families of two of them were threatened.

“This is related to the investigative works we have published about the Morón brothers, Santiago José and Ricardo José, because although I have been charged, and we still don’t have clear reasons, the two journalists who did the work have been summoned by the Prosecutor’s Office. Even though they do not live in Venezuela, Ramón Hernández and Carola Briceño threatened their families. They are told not to publish anything more. They can’t do anything against them because they are out of the country, but they threaten their families,” said Otero.

The media figure did not hesitate to indicate that this is a new assault by the regime.

“Right now, the most important thing is José Gregorio Meza because he was summoned and questioned at the Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday, and on Thursday he has to return to continue the interrogation. Additionally, they summoned the Human Resources Manager, who has nothing to do with editorial content. This is a new assault against the media for publishing things that annoy the regime.”

The editor president of EL NACIONAL stated that this new incident “adds to the file we are taking to the International Criminal Court.”

“Of course, the ICC is very interested in this kind of issues because it is a process that is advancing very quickly and this is another element because it concerns freedom of expression, the harassment of journalists. It is a systematic action over a long time and meets the requirements for complaints before the ICC, which involves the systematization of the attacks,” Otero explained.

“Now that we are conducting investigative work, we already know the consequences of doing journalism and investigations: they go against the journalists,” said the editor of Venezuela’s longest-running media outlet.

To conclude, Miguel Henrique Otero stated that they will continue to denounce, “we are not going to be silenced. This is not the first, nor will it be the last time the regime attacks us for publishing materials they don’t want known. We will continue doing journalism. We hope the regime does not have the audacity to go after journalists and summon them to testify. They are not responsible for the editorial line.”
