Using what he called the “unprecedented trade war” of the United States as a pretext, Nicolás Maduro issued an Economic Emergency Decree, aimed primarily at accumulating even more power than he already holds in Venezuela. In this way, his de facto government now adds this mechanism, whose true purpose is to operate at his discretion.
For a renewable period of two months, the Venezuelan dictator will possess extraordinary powers —which he already holds de facto— allowing him to confront the “tariff policy of the United States government” and, supposedly, ensure “the harmonious development of the national economy and protect the population and productive sectors.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) stated that Maduro is merely trying to concentrate “even more power” and denounced that this decision paves the way for abuses and discretion, moving away from what Venezuela needs: legitimate institutions, transparent policies, and an economic model that encourages production, employment, and welfare.
