As the anniversary of the electoral fraud committed by Nicolás Maduro approaches, Italy is calling for a democratic transition in Venezuela, condemning the falsification of the popular vote and the stifling of democracy.
This statement was made by Cinzia Pellegrino, a senator from the Brothers of Italy party and leader of the extraordinary human rights commission, who asserted that the elections on July 28, 2024—marked by severe irregularities, oppression of the opposition, and manipulation of the results—did not validate an act of popular sovereignty but rather represented another authoritarian blow from a regime that has lost its legitimacy.
Pressure on the Venezuelan Regime
The Italian stance, which combines a “condemnation” of past actions with an active “demand” for future change, reflects a dual approach that not only disapproves of the status quo but also pursues a tangible political objective: the restoration of democracy.
Cinzia Pellegrino noted that the Venezuelan people continue to fight for freedom while paying a very high price in terms of rights, security, and dignity. This is evident by the fact that independent journalists, activists, political opponents, and ordinary citizens have been persecuted, imprisoned, or forced into exile.
The Italian parliamentarian asserts that the economic and social conditions in Venezuela remain disastrous, while the illegitimate government of Nicolás Maduro continues to isolate itself from the international community.
In this sense, she expressed that Italy, along with its European partners and democracies around the world, renews its commitment to support the democratic transition in Venezuela.
“We will continue to demand the recognition of Edmundo González Urrutía as the true president elected by the people and to support the Venezuelan democratic forces in their brave journey. Sovereignty belongs to the people, not to the regimes that usurp it,” she concluded.
