This has not yet been confirmed by Chavista prosecutors/authorities, but it has been reported that Francisco Convit was detained in Venezuela. Convit is involved in the crimes of Alejandro Betancourt at Derwick Associates and Derwick Oil & Gas, as well as in Petrozamora (a joint venture between Gazprombank and PDVSA), and two money laundering schemes centered around PDVSA: one in 2012-13 with Luis and Ignacio Oberto Anselmi, Compagnie Bancaire Helvetique, and others worth $4.5 billion, and another in 2014 with Raul Gorrin, Gustavo Perdomo, and others valued at $1.2 billion. Pedro Binaggia, the confidential source that exposed Convit in the latter scheme, also had a role in the previous one with the Oberto brothers and was authorized to manage their accounts at EFG Bank.
Convit was accused and declared a fugitive by the Department of Justice for his involvement in a $1.2 billion scheme and had been living in Venezuela under Chavista protection. Given the recent virtual altercations between Jorge Rodríguez and Rafael Ramírez, along with reports that Alejandro Betancourt has been bragging to Rudy Giuliani about financing Juan Guaidó’s political endeavors, SEBIN intelligence agents allegedly acted against Convit. Other sources suggest that Convit’s arrest may be linked to connections with Alvaro Ledo Nass, another participant in the $1.2 billion scheme and a former board member of Petrozamora alongside Convit.
