The DelcyGate scandal seems to be just the tip of the iceberg, as the issue continues to unfold. Chavista corruption has apparently found an ally in former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who is said to facilitate various irregular business dealings involving gold and oil, among other things.
Thus, Chavista corruption extends to a wide range of illegal operations that go beyond the DelcyGate case and the mysterious suitcases of Delcy Rodríguez, as well as the Aldama network. The former Spanish leader has reportedly become a sort of agent for Nicolás Maduro’s regime to promote an oil project in Tenerife.
Rodríguez Zapatero’s Corruption Network and Chavismo
Investigations by the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of Spain’s Civil Guard have uncovered numerous pieces of evidence linking Rodríguez Zapatero to the transnational corruption network of Chavismo.
The inquiries reveal a massive scheme involving hydrocarbon negotiations that began with Rodríguez Zapatero’s collaboration with Delcy Rodríguez and Víctor de Aldama, through which they transported oil from Venezuela via the Dominican Republic.
Initially, the business included refining crude oil on the island of Tenerife to meet European standards, but the deal fell through during the Covid pandemic. They even falsified the origin seal to evade sanctions, which had reportedly been ongoing for years, generating millions in irregular profits.
